Frequently Asked Questions
- Why has my African Violet Stopped Blooming?
- Usually it is in need of repotting or it needs more light or it is in too large of a pot and is trying to fill the pot with roots before it blooms.
- How important is repotting?
- Over time the soil gets packed down and the roots don’t get the oxygen they need.
- Why do I kill violets?
- Most people kill the plants by over watering. Wick watering and mat watering can help with that. When wick watering, be sure the size of the wick is in relation to the size of the pot. Two-ply acrilic yarn is good for 2 1/4″ and 2 1/2″ pots. Four-ply works for 3″ and 4″ pots. Dandy pots are pretty for center pieces and gifts. Oyama pots are a self watering system that works well for violets and especially streptocarpus. I have both Dandy pots and Oyama pots available. Mat watering can use flannel, felt or carpet matting in the bottom of trays and just don’t over fill them.
- What size pot do I use?
- 3:1 ratio, a plant that measures 9″ in diameter leaf span should be in a 3″ pot. A 12″ diameter plant would go in a 4″ pot.
- How much light do I need?
- For natural light, a north or east window is best, they like morning sun. For flouresent or LED lights, you have to experiment with length of time and distance from the plant to determine what they like best. The leaves should be flat out from the pot, not reaching up (not enough light) or down hugging the pot (too much light).
- What kind of soil should I use?
- Most commercial soils are too heavy for wick watering and need to be lightened with more perlite. I mix my own and sell it.
